Masha first caught our attention with her cover of “Come As Your Are,” originally by Nirvana. It was featured in Liftetime’s trailer for a television show, Witches of East End. Her version of the song was incredible and really showcased her rock and roll voice. Even if this rising star is fairly new to the music scene, it is clear that she is talented.
Masha Shirin was born in Latvia but grew up in the Bronx in New York City. She moved to America with her family when she was just six months old. Now 23 years old, Masha has finally gotten into the music industry just as she always wanted. She began singing at the young age of eleven and hasn’t stopped singing since.
It also helped that she got support from her father who used to be the lead guitarist for a Latvian superstar. He played a big part in helping her create a demo CD of different covers that got her a recording deal. While growing up, she would work on her music straight after class. All that hard work is obviously beginning to pay off.
Masha does not only sing, but she is a songwriter too and was clearly born to be in the music world. Her music is a bit rock although she also is country at heart. She calls her style grungy and dirty, which is a combination of folk ballads, happy country songs, and rock and roll.
She has been working really hard on her career and splits her time between New York City and Nashville. Her first EP – Stupid, Stupid Dreams was released last May 2013. This EP showcases Masha’s expressive, confident and energetic vocals.
In November 2013, she was even nominated for 2014 Grammy’s Gig of a Lifetime, which is a fan award for up and coming stars. This is a great achievement because despite being new to the scene, she was noticed for her talents.
You can catch her do several covers of popular tunes from Adele to Lady Gaga to Christina Aguilera and many more on YouTube. Just watch a couple and you are sure to fall in love with her raspy, powerful voice.
When you listen to Masha’s voice and watch her perform, you will be certain that we will be hearing a lot more from her in the days to come. At such a young age, and such a powerful voice, she has so much to offer and we will be right here waiting for her next move.
